A Brief Summary...

Wonderdrug Records started out as Summit Records in 1990, founded by Berklee College of Music graduate and transplanted New Yorker Ken Cmar. The focus of the label was unclear, evidenced by the first two signings to the label, heavy metalers Stomp Box and R&B funksters Chucklehead. The label started out as a vehicle for promoting Ken’s production and engineering interests, but as more bands were signed, the duties of running a successful independent record label took over.

The label’s sound started to get more defined with the signings of 6L6 and Honkeyball, two of Boston’s loudest and most aggressive acts in the early nineties. Bands that blurred the lines between metal and hardcore punk became the signature for Summit Records, which changed its name to Wonderdrug Records due to a conflict with a classical label from Tempe, Arizona.

Wonderdrug made the jump from a hobby to a full-blown business in 1997 after acquiring office space in the Fenway section of Boston. The label solidified its sound and branched out of Boston with Slughog, Non Compos Mentis, and Scissorfight, from Boston, Vermont, and New Hampshire respectively. Still drawing from the regional talent pool, Wonderdrug established itself as the premier label for New England metal and hardcore. National and International distribution deals followed, which set up the key signings of the label, Boston legends Sam Black Church and Tree.

Wonderdrug kicked ass through the 90's and into the 2000's with the help of Steve Woitesec, Mark Thompson, Duncan Wilder Johnson and many awesome interns. These days, Wonderdrug remains a small but efficient label, staffed by owner Ken Cmar, graphic and web designer Nate Olean, and our jack of all trades Dr.Aghajanian.

Along with releasing to the world the best hardcore and metal New England has to offer, Wonderdrug also offers CD manufacturing and distribution services to other New England bands in an attempt to further the burgeoning music scene in this area.
